Mother’s Watching

When I was suckling,
Mother watched me,
I watched mother.
I saw only her face,
She saw endless hopes.

When I learned to walk,
Mother supported me,
I pulled mother with trust.
I only knew her hands were bumper,
She thought of the cane for her years later.

When I began schooling,
Mother took me on her bike,
I hugged her unusually tight.
I only knew she was my haven,
She stared at a Jie Fang lorry.

The day I went into the exam room,
Mother accompanied me on the way,
I moved with her arm in arm.
Her watching gave me pleasant cool ,
No matter how hot it crazily became.

The day I left for university,
Mother urged again and again,
I used promise to stop her unwilling.
She gulped back her tears,
As I went further and further away.

After my graduation,
I didn`t act as her cane,
I didn`t buy her Jie Fang lorry,
Nor did I give her any cool,
Only because I worked busily in city.

Mother has gone,
Except hopes in her eyes,
She took nothing along.
However much paper money I burn,
I`ll get my conscience severely smitten.

While mother was alive,
Her watching was hometown.
Now she has gone,
Her tombstone stands in my mind,
Watching from it guides me straight ahead.

Notes：Jie Fang lorry used to be called “Big Jie Fang”, it was a popular vehicle at that time and admired by most people.
